How to Read a CBD Laboratory Analysis (COA): A Practical Guide

I discovered hash in 1995. Back then, we didn’t know what was in it. We relied on the source, the texture, and the smell. That was the only way to analyze it.

In 2026, a tool exists. It’s called the COA—Certificate of Analysis. It’s the document issued by an accredited laboratory after analyzing a sample of your product. It lists exactly what’s in the product you’re buying.

The problem is that almost no one explains how to read it. They tell you “laboratory-tested product” along with a green leaf logo, and hope you won’t look any further.

What exactly is a COA?

A COA (Certificate of Analysis) is a report issued by an independent laboratory that has analyzed a sample of a specific CBD product. It documents the exact composition: cannabinoids present, terpenes, and contaminant test results.

What the COA is NOT:

  • Company certification (this is a report from a third-party lab, not a badge that the seller awards itself)
  • A guarantee covering the entire production run (it covers only the batch that was analyzed—see our article on batch-by-batch traceability of CBD hash)
  • A standardized document (format, fields, and units vary by lab)

What the COA IS:

  • The only objective evidence of the composition of a specific batch
  • A verifiable document (the report number can often be confirmed directly with the lab)
  • Your main tool for comparing two products or two suppliers

The Cannabinoid Profile: What You Should Look for First

The most important section of a COA is the cannabinoid table. It lists, for each detected cannabinoid, its concentration as a percentage (%) or in milligrams per gram (mg/g).

Lines to read first:

  • Total CBD — this is the main cannabinoid. Make sure it matches what’s listed on the packaging.

  • Other listed cannabinoids —CBG, CBN, and CBC—are normal in a full-spectrum extract. However, the presence of HHC, H4CBD, or THCP should raise a red flag: these are semi-synthetic substances that should not be found in “natural” CBD. Legal Thresholds: France vs. Switzerland

The COA indicates the measured THC level. To interpret this figure correctly, you need to know which legal framework applies to your product.

In France: the legal threshold is 0.3% total THC (decree of December 30, 2021). In Switzerland: the threshold is 1.0% (LStup CH). A product manufactured and analyzed according to Swiss standards may therefore be legal in Switzerland but illegal in France. The legal differences regarding CBD between Switzerland and France have direct implications for interpreting a COA—particularly regarding what the stated THC level means depending on the country of sale.

Terpenes, contaminants, residues: other sections to check

A comprehensive COA doesn’t stop at cannabinoids. Other important sections include:

  • Terpene profile — lists the terpenes present. A full-spectrum product must contain them. An isolate does not. If a product claims to be “full-spectrum” but the COA does not list any terpenes, this is an inconsistency.
  • Pesticide testing — pass/fail results or measured concentrations. Pay particular attention to products of unknown origin.
  • Heavy metals —lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic. A reputable lab tests for them systematically.
  • Solvent residues — if the product was extracted using supercritical CO2 or a chemical solvent (ethanol, butane), the residues must be below the regulatory thresholds.

4 Common Pitfalls When Reading a COA

The most common issues to watch out for:

  • A COA for the entire product line, not for your specific batch. Verify that the COA’s batch number matches the lot number of your product. A generic COA does not prove anything about what you received.
  • A COA dated more than 12 months ago. A product’s composition can change over time (notably, THC breaking down into CBN). An COA that is too old is no longer reliable.
  • A non-accredited laboratory. The laboratory must be accredited to ISO 17025 or its national equivalent. A Certificate of Analysis (COA) issued by an in-house laboratory or an unidentified laboratory has no value.
  • An COA that lists only CBD and THC. A complete profile must list all cannabinoids detected above the detection limit. If only CBD and THC appear in a full-spectrum extract, the COA is either incomplete, or the product is not what it claims to be.

In a nutshell: How to Read a COA in 5 Steps

  1. Verify that the COA lot number matches your product.
  2. Check the total CBD content—compare it to what’s listed on the packaging.
  3. Check the total THC content—use the legal limit in your country.
  4. Scan the complete list of cannabinoids—set an alert if HHC, H4CBD, or THCP appear.
  5. Verify that the contamination tests are included and have been passed.
