HHC vs. CBD: What These Two Molecules Don’t Have in Common

You’ll sometimes find them on the same shelves, on the same websites, with the same simple packaging and the same promises of quality. However, CBD and HHC are not the same thing—neither chemically, legally, nor in terms of how they affect your body.

What we’re going to do here is clearly distinguish between the two molecules, explain why confusion has arisen in the market, and give you the tools to figure out what’s actually in the product you’re buying.


What exactly is HHC?

HHC—hexahydrocannabinol—is a cannabinoid. It occurs naturally in the Cannabis sativa plant, but in such minute quantities that it is not feasible to extract it commercially.

Virtually all of the HHC available on the market is therefore produced in a laboratory through a chemical process called hydrogenation: CBD (derived from legal hemp) is converted into HHC by adding hydrogen atoms to its molecular structure. It’s the same principle used to turn vegetable oil into margarine.

What distinguishes HHC from CBD at the molecular level:

  • CBD is a natural cannabinoid found in high concentrations in industrial hemp varieties. Its chemical structure is stable and well documented.
  • HHC is produced through the chemical modification of CBD. The production process consistently yields two isomers— 9R-HHC and 9S-HHC —which have different effects, and whose ratio varies from batch to batch depending on the synthesis conditions.

This last point has a direct implication for consumers: two “HHC” products can have very different effects depending on their isomeric composition, even at the same dosage. This level of heterogeneity does not exist with CBD.

The point most often overlooked in online comparisons: HHC acts on the CB1 receptors of the endocannabinoid system—the same ones as THC—and can produce psychoactive effects. CBD, on the other hand, does not bind directly to these CB1 receptors—which is why it is not classified as a controlled substance in most legal frameworks.


Comparative Law: France, Switzerland, the EU

It is important to understand the difference in legal status between CBD and HHC—especially since the market has sometimes portrayed HHC as a “legal alternative” to cannabis.

In France

Since the decree of June 3, 2023, HHC has been classified as a narcotic in France. Its production, sale, importation, and possession are prohibited. The classification is based on its structural similarity to THC and its documented psychoactive effects. HHC products have been removed from the shelves of French CBD stores following this decision.

In Switzerland — the LNPS wedge

The situation is different—and offers greater protection for consumers. Since 2016, Switzerland has had a specific legislative tool: the LNPS (Federal Act on New Psychoactive Substances). This law makes it possible to quickly add a new substance to the register of controlled substances, without waiting for it to be classified as a narcotic under the Narcotics Act.

HHC is regulated under this framework. Specifically, it cannot be sold as a standard CBD product in Switzerland. In Switzerland, the LNPS quickly regulates new psychoactive substances; in France, HHC has been classified as a narcotic since June 2023. In the EU

The situation varies by country. Several member states have followed France’s lead in banning HHC. Others are still hesitating. The European Monitoring Center for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) has been monitoring HHC since 2022 and has recommended control measures at the European level—though full harmonization has not yet been achieved.


FAQ — HHC vs. CBD

Is HHC legal in Switzerland?

In Switzerland, HHC is regulated by the LNPS (Federal Act on New Psychoactive Substances). It cannot be sold as a standard CBD product. Switzerland’s regulatory framework for new psychoactive substances is more restrictive than that of some European countries, which provides better protection for consumers.

Do HHC and CBD have the same effects?

No. CBD is not psychoactive and does not act directly on CB1 receptors. HHC, on the other hand, can produce psychoactive effects depending on the ratio of its isomers (9R-HHC and 9S-HHC). The two molecules have very different effect profiles.

Can HHC be found in a product marketed as CBD?

Yes. Products marketed under names that suggest they contain CBD may actually contain HHC, which is added to simulate more pronounced effects or a higher concentration. The only way to detect this is through a COA with a complete cannabinoid profile that includes testing for semi-synthetic cannabinoids.

What is the difference between a natural cannabinoid and a semi-synthetic cannabinoid?

A natural cannabinoid (CBD, THC, CBG, etc.) is present in the plant and can be extracted directly. A semi-synthetic cannabinoid (HHC, H4CBD, THCP, etc.) is manufactured in a laboratory through the chemical modification of a natural cannabinoid. This distinction has direct legal implications in most countries.

How can you verify that a CBD resin does not contain HHC?

Ask the producer for the lot-specific COA. A reliable cannabinoid profile explicitly states whether semi-synthetic cannabinoids were tested for. If a COA is not available or only covers CBD and THC, request a more comprehensive profile.
