In 2026, the CannaSwiss Cup awarded our Bubble Hash second place in the consumer vote. This wasn’t a marketing contest. It was a resin competition, judged blind by experts in the field.
Swiss artisanal CBD hash isn’t just a niche within a niche. It’s a craft that’s still evolving—and at Hash Gang, we’re crafting it by hand, batch by batch, in our workshop in St-Légier-La Chiésaz.
The question deserves a straightforward answer: “artisanal” refers to what resists industrialization. Not out of nostalgia—but out of technical necessity.
Artisanal CBD hash is, first and foremost, free of chemical solvents. Extraction with ice water, dry sifting, and manual rubbing: these artisanal methods separate the trichomes without altering their biochemistry. Whatever the terpenes have created in the plant, the hashmaker preserves it. No chemical shortcuts that burn away the aromas along the way.
Next is batch size. Artisanal production works with small batches—a few kilograms of raw material at most. This allows producers to oversee every step, sort the different fractions, and discard anything that doesn’t pass the full-melt test. On a large scale, this sorting becomes economically unfeasible. Yield takes precedence over quality.
Ultimately, it comes down to human touch: selecting the CBD hemp buds, choosing the right time to harvest, and assessing the texture as the product emerges from the filter bags. These decisions can’t be automated. They’re learned through experience—over the course of years.
What comes off a standardized production line may be acceptable, consistent, and uniform. What comes out of an artisanal workshop may be exceptional. That’s the difference—nothing else.
Switzerland does not have the same history with hemp as Morocco or Nepal. But it has two advantages that few countries combine: favorable regulations and a network of CBD hemp producers that is among the most reputable in Europe.
Since the 2016 amendment to the Narcotics Act, CBD products containing less than 1% THC have been legal in Switzerland. This threshold—well above the 0.3% limit in effect in the EU—has opened up new creative possibilities. Swiss hashmakers have been able to work with terpen-rich CBD hemp strains—biologically similar to traditional cultivars—and produce resins that stand up to comparison with historic benchmarks.
Hash Gang is part of this movement. Its workshop is located in St-Légier-La Chiésaz (Vaud), on the edge of the Vaud Alps. Three techniques, three distinct results. Each follows its own logic—none is inherently better, and all are demanding to execute.
The CBD hemp is agitated in tanks filled with ice and water. The cold weakens the trichomes, which break off and pass through a series of filter bags (ranging from 220 to 25 microns). The result: a concentrated resin, rich in terpenes, with a texture ranging from sandy to buttery depending on the quality of the sorting.
Our artisanal Bubble Hash is the culmination of this process—the one that won over the judges at the 2026 CannaSwiss Cup.
The hemp buds are passed through fine-mesh screens, without water. The trichomes fall off mechanically and accumulate underneath—this is kief, or pollen. Several successive passes through increasingly fine screens produce a fraction of increasing purity.
The technique is more accessible, but producing a high-quality “full melt” dry sift requires just as much precision as making bubble hash—any shortcuts are immediately visible to the naked eye.
The oldest method: rubbing fresh hemp flower tops between the palms. The heat from the hands releases the resin, which builds up layer by layer. A technique originating in the Himalayan valleys, charas is the most artisanal form of hash there is—by definition, impossible to mechanize.

Four practical tips to consider before making a purchase:
Color. High-quality, artisanal CBD hash ranges in color from pale blond (bubble hash, dry sift) to dark brown (charas, pressed pollen). A distinct green color indicates residual chlorophyll and insufficient extraction. A suspicious, glossy black color may indicate additives or oxidation.
The smell when you open it. Hash that doesn’t smell like anything has lost its terpenes. Artisanal hash should release a complex array of aromas from the very first whiff—woody, spicy, fruity, earthy. That’s the first test Don99 applies to every batch.
Texture when heated. Hold it between your thumb and index finger for 30 seconds: it should soften slightly and become pliable. If it’s too brittle, it’s too dry. If it’s too greasy and sticky, there’s residual moisture.
The laboratory analysis certificate (COA). A legal artisanal CBD hash in Switzerland comes with a COA confirming that THC < s 1% (LStup). This certificate also attests to the absence of heavy metals and pesticides. COAs are available upon request—this is the norm, not the exception.
Yes. In Switzerland, the production and sale of CBD resins have been legal since 2016, provided the THC content is less than 1% (LStup). All Hash Gang products comply with this regulation, and COAs are available upon request.
Artisanal hash is produced in small batches, with each step supervised manually and strict sorting criteria—which results in a lower yield and a higher price (15–25 CHF/g). Industrial hash prioritizes volume: mechanized processes, rapid extraction, a less complex flavor profile, and affordable prices (8–14 CHF/g). The difference is evident in the smell, texture, and the full-melt test.
