Three main categories dominate traditional hash production—charas, pollen, and pressed hash. Here’s how to recognize them and what they reveal about the craftsmanship behind them.

To understand where these traditions come from, start by reading our article on the origins of hash: Morocco, Lebanon, Nepal, and Kashmir.

Charas: creamy, hand-rolled resin

Charas is the oldest method on the Indian subcontinent. No tools, no solvents: the plant is rolled between the palms while still alive, and the resin accumulates until it forms a dark, shiny, slightly sticky ball.

Texture: creamy, pliable at room temperature, almost like marzipan. When you roll it between your fingers, it stretches without breaking.

Color: deep brownish black, with a characteristic lustrous sheen.

Aromatic profile: dominant earthy notes, resinous undertones, and spicy hints. The younger the resin, the more its herbaceous character comes through.

Pollen: dry-sifted powdered resin

Pollen is obtained by dry-sifting plant material. The resin breaks down into fine grains that resemble pollen—hence the name. It forms the basis of dry sift and most modern Moroccan hashish.

Texture: powdery, gritty to the touch. Crumbly but compacts under pressure.

Color: ranging from light blonde to golden brown, depending on the fineness of the sieve and the degree of purification.

Aromatic profile: bright flavor profile, sweet notes, very distinct terpenes.

The finer the screen (90, 73, or 45-micron mesh), the purer the pollen. The best dry sift is processed through several successive mesh sizes. To understand the technical difference between bubble hash and dry sift, read our comparison of bubble hash vs. dry sift.

Pressed: resin compacted using traditional methods

The key is the finishing touch. You take some pollen or dry sift, heat it slightly, and press it using a mechanical or manual press. The resin becomes compact, dense, and elastic.

Texture: dense, springy to the touch, slightly pliable when warmed by the hands.

Color: dark brown to golden brown, varying in lightness depending on the purity of the base pollen.

Aromatic profile: balanced, with earthy, resinous, and sometimes spicy notes. The pressing process releases certain heavy terpenes.

Bubble Hash: Resin Purified with Ice-Cold Water

Bubble Hash is produced through an ice-water extraction process (the “ice-o-lator” method). The cold weakens the trichomes, which separate from the plant material and are collected through fine-mesh bags. The result is a resin of exceptional purity, free of the plant-derived impurities found in traditional methods.

To learn more about the selection criteria and find the best products available in Switzerland, check out our guide to the best Swiss CBD hash.

Before the taste, it’s the texture that speaks.
