A brief journey through the historic lands of hashmaking, by Don99 (Master Hashmaker, Hash Factory, St-L\u00e9gier). <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh: charas<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The high valleys of<strong>North India<\/strong> are probably the cradle of hash. Charas (&#8220;\u0939\u0936\u0940\u0936&#8221; in Hindi) has been produced here for centuries using a surprisingly simple technique: live hemp flowers are rubbed between the hands. The resin adheres to the skin, forming a dark deposit which is then scraped off.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This process gives charas its <strong>distinctive texture<\/strong> \u2014creamy, rich, almost like a salve. The Himachal Pradesh region (particularly the Manali Valley) is famous for its <strong>\u201cManali Cream<\/strong>,\u201d a type of charas known for its exceptionally smooth texture. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Charas is probably the most \u201cvibrant\u201d form of hash: it\u2019s the closest to the original plant, with a deep, earthy flavor profile. For centuries, Berber families have been producing hash here using a combined method: <strong>dry sieving followed by pressing<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The dried material is beaten over fine sieves, detaching the trichomes. The harvested resin is then gently heated and pressed into wafers or blocks &#8211; which stabilizes it and concentrates the aromas.
